Lānaʻi Cat Sanctuary
The Lānaʻi Cat Sanctuary is a lush, 3.5 acre purradise, giving hundreds of feral cats a home for life and was voted one of the best things to do in Hawaiʻi. The sanctuary also protects the islandʻs many endangered birds. The sanctuary is open every day and all holidays from 10 am to 3 pm. No appointment or reservation is required. Admission is free. This 501c3 nonprofit relies on donations from visitors to fund its operations. The one-of-a-kind haven serves as a model for cat and conservation interests that rescue cats and protects the island’s native birds.

Lānaʻi City
A visit to the island of Lānaʻi is incomplete without making a stop in historic Lānaʻi City. Away from the hustle and bustle, this special town is the perfect place to slow down the pace of life. This unique town invites you to stroll amongst the locally-owned mom-and-pop shops and boutiques, dive deeper into the history and culture of Lānaʻi by visiting the Lānaʻi Culture & Heritage Center, enjoy local art at the art center and art gallery, enjoy lunch and coffee in one of the charming cafe’s surrounding Dole Park and relax in the serenity and aloha this upcountry town offers. You won’t find any chain stores in Lānaʻi City but you will find a tight-knit community that values ‘ohana (family) and is full of heart. The residents of the town invite tourists to visit but what will love about Lānaʻi City is that it is not a tourist town.

Hale Keaka: Lānaʻi Theater
The crown jewel of theater experiences in Hawaii, the historical and beautifully restored Hale Keaka screens movies from two 91-seat theaters, outfitted with state-of-the-art digital projection and sound systems.
Lānaʻi’s only theater was commissioned in 1926 by James Dole to entertain the plantation workers and families that resided on the island. For more than 70 years, it served as a gathering place where the community enjoyed hundreds of films, live plays and musical performances.
The theater closed its doors in the 1990s and remained a landmark of Lānaʻi’s history until 2015 when it was fully restored and reopened under the name Hale Keaka (which means “house of pictures” in Hawaiian). A number of talented designers and contractors were brought together to reimagine the old theater while maintaining its original vintage appeal.
